Everyday uses for essential oils

Essential oils don't have to be for aromatherapy or massage oils - they can be used everyday.  Here are some uses in the home which you may not even have throught of - give some a try:
  • Don't spend money on scented drawer liners - place a few drops of your fevourite essential oil on a cotton wool ball and place in the corners..
  • An essential oil dropped onto a radiator will fill the room with its fragrance and add theraupeutic qualities.
  • To dispel bugs and other pests, especially gnats and mosquitos drop a few drops of Citronella oil on a melting candle.
  • Add a few drops of your favourite oil in a spray bottle with water and shake - use as an airfreshner.
  • Apply 1 drop of Lemon essential oil daily directly to a wart.
  • Rosemary oil promotes alertness try adding a few drops onto a hankerchief and Inhaling occasionally during long car trips.
  • Add Cinnamon. lemon. peppermint or pine oil to furniture polish and wipe down the wood.
  • Place a few drops of your favourite essential oil on paper and put them in a plastic bag. Seal it and leave overnight to infuse the aroma. Great to Infuse bookmarks and stationery with essential oils.
  • Drop approximately 2-3 drops of Vetivert, Cypress, Cedarwood, Frankincense and Myrrh oil or blend of your choice on a dried log and allow time for the oil to soak in before putting the log on the fire, smells wonderful.
  • Sprinkle Lavender oil on the outside of your window frames to deter moths and flies.
  • Place 1 or 2 drops of Chamomile or Lavender on your pillow before retiring for restful sleep.
  • When washing out the fridge, freezer or oven, add 1 drop of Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Bergamot, or Orange essential oil to the final rinse water.
  • For burms or scalds, drop Lavender or Tea tree oil directly on the effected area. Promotes healing and prevents infection.
  • Place 1 or 2 drops of Rosemary oil on your hair brush before brushing to promote growth and thickness.
  • To bring a fever down add drop of Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lavender oils to a hot bath.
  • Use Geranium, Lavender and Bergamot in a room diffuser or 6-8 drops of this blend in the bath to alleviate depression.
  • For nice smelling towels, sheets, clothes, etc. place a few drops of your favourite essential oil onto a small tea towel and pop into the clothes dryer while drying.

3 Basic essential oils and their uses


Essential Oils are easy to use and very useful for treating everyday illnesses and conditions. Here are 3 common essential oils and uses...

Lavender - is the most common essential oil that most people have heard or used and it really is a  "must-have" essential oil. It is highly renowned for its healing properties, relaxing and excellent for general soothing and calming. If you only have one bottle of essential oil in your home it should be Lavender essential oil.

Lavender has great overall calming effects, pop a few drops on a hankerchief or pillow at night time to help restful sleep.
Place a few drops on sunburnt skin to ease pain or 2-3 drops on a rash will stop itching and heal your skin. Lavender on a cut will help speed the healing process.

Peppermint - is one of the most effective essential oils for treating digestive ailments such as flatulence, slow digestion and heartburn.

Peppermint can help relieve nausea, indigestion, gas pains, and diarrhoea. Place a few drops in a table spoon of carrier oil and massage on your abdomen. Try also massaging several diluted drops into the soles of your feet to reduce a fever.

If you suffer inflammation from arthritis, sprains, strains and bruising - rub 2 -3 drops of diluted peppermint oil on the affected areas.

Its also a great deterant to ants, cockroaches, mice and rats, place two drops of peppermint on cotton wool and place along the path or point of entry.

Lemon - Has antiseptic properties and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune function. Citrus oils have long been used for their calming and balancing actions. It is also commonly used in weight loss and cellulite reduction.

As well as tea tree you can add a drop on your hands after using a public restroom.  Also add a few drops of lemon essential oil to cleaning water, especially if you have pets.

To clean and preserve fresh fruit, add 2-3 drops of lemon oil to a bowl of cool water. Drop the clean fruit into the water and stir. Don't rinse.

Lemon oil is great for oily skin, add a diluted drop to help balance the sebaceous glands.

Please Remember...

 - Most Essential oils must be dilutd with a carrier oil 2-5% (1% for children and the elderly)

 - Citrus oils should NOT be applied to skin that will be exposed to direct sunlight or UV rays within 72 hours.

 - Some Essential oils can not be used with some medical conditions such as high blood pressure, pregnancy and cancer - please ensure you consult a Doctor or Aromatherapist if not sure.
